Confirmation

“In the course of their Christian development, those baptized at an early age are expected, when they are ready and have been duly prepared, to make a mature public affirmation of their faith and commitment to the responsibilities of their Baptism and to receive the laying on of hands by the bishop” (The Book of Common Prayer, 412).

Confirmation and Reception are the rites in the Episcopal Church by which we make the adult decision to live out the Christian faith in this particular denomination. For adults and youth (ages 16+), confirmation is a chance to confirm their commitment to Christ and renew the vows made at their baptism. For those confirmed in another Christian tradition (e.g., Catholic, Lutheran, Methodist), reception is an opportunity to be received into the communion of the Episcopal Church. Confirmation or reception allows one to serve on a parish vestry as well as vote for vestry members.

For those interested in confirmation or reception in the Episcopal Church, classes are offered every year in preparation for the Bishop’s annual visitation to the parish. The celebration of Confirmation, Reception, and Reaffirmation of Baptismal Vows happens during said visit.

Our yearly visitation is scheduled for Sunday, May 17, 2026. The Rt. Rev. Jennifer Brooke-Davidson, Assistant Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina, will be joining us.

If you have further questions about this process, please contact the Parish Administrator or one of the clergy at the church office (919-942-3108 or admin@holyfamilychapelhill.org).
